Sherwin Tiu aims to defend his title in the Pozorrubio Town Fiesta Rapid Chess Tournament in Pozorrubio, Pangasinan on Saturday, Jan. 11, 2025.
Tiu, however, is expected to be challenged by Jerry Areque, Jason Rojo and Genghis Imperial who are also seeing action in the tournament along with Precious Eve Ferrer, Reddy Ceralde Balarbar, Rodolfo Rivera, Romy Fagon, Roadster Palamig, Regyne Palaming, Judylito Ulanday, Ormilito Ordizo and Fidel Labuanan.
The rapid chess tournament is sponsored by Mayor Kelvin Tan, Vice Mayor Ernesto Salcedo III and SK Municipal Federation president Vince Karl Thirdy Sarmiento, in line with its grassroots chess development program of Pozorrubio.
“We are pleased to invite you to participate in the Pozorrubio Town Fiesta Rapid Chess Tournament. This prestigious event will bring together chess enthusiasts from various regions to compete, showcase their skills, and celebrate the spirit of the game,” said Salcedo.
The champion here will run away with the lion’s share of P10,000.
The second to fifth placers will receive P5,000, P3,000, P2,000, and P1,000, respectively. The sixth to 10th placers will receive P500 each while the 11th to 20th will pocket P300 apiece.
The top five players from Pozorrubio will have a special prize of P2,000, P1,000, P800, P700, and P500, respectively, while 6th to 10th placers will earn P300 each.
The top four kiddies players will get P3,000, P2,000, P1,000 and P500, respectively, while the 5th to 10th placers will go home with P300 each.
The top Pozorrubio kiddies will receive a bonus prize of P500.
National Master Almario Marlon Quiroz Bernardino Jr., meanwhile, will hold a 20-board simultaneous chess exhibition matches before the tournament at the same venue.
