MANILA, Philippines — Super Typhoon Pepito is expected to weaken after its second landfall over Aurora or Quezon later today, the Philippine Atmospheric, Geophysical and Astronomical Services Administration (Pagasa) said Sunday.
Signal No. 5 was raised over the eastern portion of Polillo Islands (Patnanungan, Jomalig) and Calaguas Islands, remain up over several areas in Luzon and Visayas.
Moving northwestward at 15 kilometers per hour (kph), Pepito’s eye was estimated over the coastal waters of Vinzons, Camarines Norte.
It had maximum sustained winds of 185 kph near the center and gustiness of up to 255 kph.
Pagasa administrator Nathaniel Servando said the super typhoon has just passed over the waters north of Calaguas Islands and is now over the sea east of Quezon.
Pepito would pass close or over Polillo Islands before making landfall over northern Quezon or central or southern Aurora Sunday afternoon.
It will continue moving generally west-northwestward and exit the Philippine Area of Responsibility Monday morning or afternoon.
