MANILA, Philippines — An official of the Commission on Elections was ambushed in Zamboanga City by unidentified assailants on Saturday, killing a brother, the poll body said.

Comelec Chairman George Garcia condemned the shooting of lawyer Vidzfar Julie, provincial election officer of Sulu, calling it a ” treacherous act of violence against our people” and demanded speedy action from authorities.

Julie’s brother, Nader Am, 57, died after being initially reported as being in “critical condition.” The poll officer is safe.

“No words are enough to condemn this treacherous act of violence against our people, What is more gruesome and unforgivable is when a love [one] is caught in the crossfire so to speak,” Garcia said.

“We are not yet prepared to cry hopelessness but a call for immediate action from authorities is strongly demanded,” Garcia said.

Julie and were on board a black Fortuner SUV when the incident happened in Barangay Sta. Maria early Saturday.
