QUEZON City will continue to implement its “Car-free, Carefree Sundays” along Tomas Morato Avenue to promote physical activity and reduce vehicular emissions, Mayor Joy Belmonte said Monday.
Belmonte said the initiative will be implemented once a month for now from 6 a.m. to 10 a.m. After a year, it will be enforced twice a month.
“Car-Free Sundays reflect our vision of a sustainable, people-first Quezon City,” Belmonte said.
“We want to encourage outdoor activities, promote healthy living, and support our commitment to environmental sustainability,” she added.
She said that “Car-free Sundays” is a result of an ordinance passed late last year which closes a portion of the avenue to vehicular traffic to give way to pedestrians, joggers and cyclists.
“The initiative aims to foster an active mobility, reduce vehicular emissions, and create a cleaner, greener urban environment,” the mayor said in a statement emailed to The Manila Times.
The road closure covers Tomas Morato Avenue from Timog Avenue to Don Alejandro Roces Avenue.
