MANILA, Philippines — President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Friday said he was “happy” with what he described as a “political reconciliation” between him and former vice president Leni Robredo.

In his speech during the signing of the Academic Recovery and Accessible Learning Act in Malacañang, Marcos thanked Senate President Francis Escudero for setting up his short meeting with Robredo in Sorsogon on Thursday.

“Senate President Chiz Escudero, who has taken a very important step towards political reconciliation yesterday. Well done. I’m so happy you did that,” a smiling Marcos said.

Escudero invited Robredo to welcome Marcos at the inauguration of the Sorsogon Sports Arena in the province.

This was the first time that Marcos and Robredo were seen in public together since the 2022 presidential elections.

Marcos and Robredo were stiff rivals both in the 2016 vice presidential race, and into the May 2022 presidential race.

Marcos lost to Robredo in 2016, but overwhelmingly won the 2022 elections against her.
