MANILA, Philippines — Malacanang on Wednesday evening announced the suspension of work in government offices and classes at all levels in Luzon on Thursday..
“Upon the recommendation of the National Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council relative to the forecasted continuous heavy rainfall due to Severe Tropical Storm “Kristine,” and to aid in the rescue and relief operations of the government, work in government offices and classes at all levels in Luzon are hereby suspended on 24 October 2024,” the Office of the Executive Secretary (OES) said in a statement.
The order, however, does not cover agencies “involved in the delivery of basic and health services, preparedness/response to disasters and calamities, and/or the performance of other vital services are hereby directed to continue their operations and render the necessary services.”
Moreover, the localized cancellation or suspension of classes and/or work in government offices in other areas may be implemented by their respective local chief xecutives, pursuant to relevant laws, rules and regulations.
“The suspension of work for private companies and offices is left to the discretion of their respective heads,” the OES further noted.
President Ferdinand Marcos Jr. on Wednesday instructed pertinent government agencies to immediately start rescue and relief operations in typhoon-hit areas, particularly the Bicol region.
He ordered the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) to use the necessary equipment for opening up all the roads and bridges blocked by debris due to landslides.
In the event roads are impassable, the Department of National Defense (DND) shall take charge in airlifting relief goods, medical equipment and other necessary items for immediate distribution to affected communities.
Apart from delivering the goods by land and air, Marcos also directed the mobilization of the Philippine Coast Guard (PCG) to ferry relief goods, medical equipment and other necessary items for immediate distribution to affected communities.
“We can ask the Coast Guard also. The Coast Guard also plays a part in that naman. So, let’s get ready,” he said.
