MANILA, Philippines — Kai Sotto won’t be playing in the third window of the FIBA Asia Cup Qualifiers in February after suffering a torn arterior cruciate ligament (ACL), as confirmed by the Koshigaya Alphas.

Sotto considers this the most unfortunate event in his basketball career and worst way to start 2025.

“The worst way to start the year, might be the darkest day of my basketball career, when I was told I tore my ACL,” he wrote on Instagram.

While playing for Japanese side Koshigaya Alphas, Sotto sustained a knee injury on Sunday, as the side lost to the Mikawa Seahorses 77-79.

“Tough to let this one sink in. I appreciate all the love and support everyone has given me these past few days. I know God has a better plan for me and we just have to keep going,” Sotto said.

Sotto’s post received comments for a speedy recovery from actor Ruru Madrid, and Gilas teammates AJ Edu and Gabe Norwood.

Recovery time typically takes six months, putting his participation in the FIBA Asia Cup in August in Jeddah, Saudi Arabia, in doubt.
