MANILA, Philippines — Julia Coronel made her first debut in the Premier Volleyball League (PVL), and she is keen to give her all with Galeries, playing not only as a setter but as a spiker.
The possibilities are limitless for the No.3 PVL Draft pick, and she wants to uphold her word and help the franchise improve from its previous record.
“Well, the adjustments we really practiced that. I also told to coach (Lerma Giron), that if they need to be a spiker I am willing to do it, because I know that I can deliver in that department. I don’t want to be selfish, and I also ready myself if coach tells me to be an attacker also,” Coronel said.
The Chargers spoiled Coronel’s debut game after a 30-28, 25-15, 25-16, 25-23 win in the All-FIlipino Conference 2024-25 opening day, last Nov. 9.
The Alas Pilipinas setter orchestrated nine excellent sets and tallied eight points.
The Galeries put up a fight in the fourth frame, as Coronel’s through-the-block hit ended the 4-0 run of the Chargers, 20-16.
Fifi Sharma quickly responded with a hammer, but Coronel slammed a crosscourt hit to help her team trail behind.
However, the more experienced Akari squad showed more composure down the stretch.
Despite the loss, the De La Salle stalwart cherished her first PVL game.
“I know that I still have a lot to work on. I would say this was a good debut for me. I am happy that I am finally playing for the pros, and I am happy that I am here to play. But I still want to be more competitive as a player, and our team to be more competitive,” Coronel said.
Galeries will try to notch its first win in the tournament when it faces the formidable Choco Mucho on Thursday, Nov. 14, at the PhilSports Arena in Pasig City.
With Coronel having a face-off this time with former De La Salle setter Mars Alba, she is off to take the challenge.
“I am so excited, actually today I faced a lot of my teammates. I am looking forward to face Mars. She is one of my mentors since college, I am hoping that it will be an exciting game on Thursday, and we will just give our best,” she said.
