MANILA, Philippines — Coach Ghicka Bernabe is no longer in charge but she left a program so strong that it still guides the NU Pep Squad to this day.

Remaining faithful to that program worked wonders for the team as it claimed its historic 8th overall title after ruling the UAAP Season 87 Cheerdance Competition at the Mall of Asia Arena on Sunday.

With its victory, NU tied UST Salinggawi Dance Troupe and UP Pep Squad atop the upper echelon of championships won.

“I’m very thankful that the program did not let us down,” said current NU coach Gabby Bajacan after the NU’s triumphant 713-point performance.

“We really believed in that system, because it’s amazing, so many coaches left us but God still gave us this championship.”

NU’s redemption wasn’t turbulence free. The departure of key coaching staff members and the sting of last year’s second-place finish created significant hurdles.

Yet, the foundation laid by Bernabe and her staff remained steadfast.

It was this unwavering belief in the system, and the values instilled by Bernabe, that helped propel the NU Pep Squad back to the top of the rankings. The athletes continued to rely on their rigorous training and all the key principles that have been a hallmark of the program for years.

The squad’s space-themed routine and the “heliktopter helikopter” pyramid stunt was a testament to their growth, not only as athletes but as a cohesive unit.

“We’re really thankful to Coach Carl Babilonia. Thank you so much for your creativity in that pyramid.” Bajacan said about the stunt. “They are the canvas of our work. They are the ones who will create our masterpiece.”

Bajacan emphasized that the victory wasn’t just about the title—it was about the team’s perseverance and willingness to improve.

“We always say that we are far from perfect so that we have room for improvement, we don’t want to be stagnant,” he explained. “We do not want to label ourselves as good already, no we always have something to improve on.”

For the NU Pep Squad, their eighth title is a testament to the strength of a program built on years of solid foundation.

With the teachings of Ghicka Bernabe still guiding them and Coach Bajacan’s vision leading the way, the sky remains the limit for one of the most successful cheerleading teams in UAAP history. ANDRE SOTELO
