MANILA, Philippines — The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) said on Saturday that the agency would accept food donations from restaurants and fast food establishments as it encouraged individuals who would want to render volunteer service at the newly-opened ‘Walang Gutom Kitchen’ (WGK).

DSWD Secretary Rex Gatchalian, in a video message posted on its Facebook page, called on organizations and individuals to be part of the project as they welcomed food and service donations.

The WGK, launched on December 16, was the agency’s latest program that offers holistic solutions to homelessness and hunger, according to the DSWD chief.

Its primary clientele are children, individuals, and families in street situations and other Filipinos experiencing involuntary hunger.

Gatchalian also stressed that WGK will also also prevent food wastage aside from addressing involuntary hunger.

He said the DSWD has an agreement with some hotels, restaurants and fast food stores that would donate their unconsumed food for a day instead of throwing it away.

With the program, food wastage will now be largely addressed as these establishments will simply bring their unconsumed food to WGK in Pasay, he said.

“Then the food would be served to our hungry fellowmen and families, especially those found in the streets,” Gatchalian said.

The DSWD will open more soup kitchens nationwide to realize President Ferdinand Marcos Jr.’s vision of a hunger-free Philippines, according to the DSWD secretary.

This early, the DSWD said Nestle Philippines has donated 300 pieces of 1-kilo pack of powdered chocolate while Bossing Nation gave five boxes of dishwashing liquid.
