MANILA, Philippines — Interior and Local Government Secretary Jonvic Remulla issued a strong call to action for local authorities and communities to prioritize safety and preparedness following the eruption of Mt. Kanlaon, one of the most active volcanos in the Philippines.
In a statement issued Tuesday evening, Remulla urged all local chief executives in the affected areas to begin immediate evacuation efforts within the 4 to 6-kilometer permanent danger zone (PDZ) surrounding the volcano.
He stressed that special attention must be given to vulnerable groups, including pregnant women, children, senior citizens, and persons with disabilities.
To address the needs of evacuees, Remulla emphasized the importance of preparing essential supplies, including food, non-food items, and personal protective equipment.
He also called for the establishment of temporary shelters and urged local authorities to support displaced families, especially those seeking refuge with relatives outside designated evacuation centers.
Emergency response teams specializing in search and rescue, evacuation, and medical assistance were instructed to remain on standby for rapid deployment to high-risk areas, Remulla reported.
The DILG chief also underscored the importance of declaring a state of imminent danger or calamity in severely affected regions if necessary. He recommended the suspension of classes, office work, and travel to safeguard public safety.
Remulla encouraged local government units (LGUs) to collaborate closely with their respective Regional Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Councils (RDRRMCs). The guidance provided in the Operation L!STO Disaster Preparedness Manual for Kanlaon Volcano Eruption should serve as a framework for action.
He assured the public of the DILG’s commitment to supporting Filipinos during this crisis.
“The DILG stands with you in these trying times. Let us remain vigilant and prioritize the safety of our communities. Take care, everyone,” he said.
