MANILA, Philippines — Comedian and “Eat Bulaga!” host Jose Manalo is officially engaged to his longtime partner, former EB Babe Mergene Maranan.

The heartfelt proposal happened on Dec. 2 at a picturesque resort, with Manalo serenading Maranan to the tune of Yeng Constantino’s “Ikaw.” The moment was made even more special as the rendition was accompanied by a guitarist and saxophonist.

Manalo began his serenade in the resort’s lobby, slowly walking toward the pool area decorated with flowers, hearts, and a neon-lit sign reading, “Will you marry me?” As he approached, Maranan, visibly surprised, exclaimed, “Ano ‘yan? Totoo ba ‘yan? (What’s that? Is that real?)” before adding, “Hala, nahihiya ako (Oh no, I’m shy).”

When Manalo finally got down on one knee and presented the engagement ring, he asked, “Puwede ba kitang pakasalan? (Can I marry you?)” Overwhelmed with emotion, Maranan said yes, prompting cheers and applause from their loved ones in attendance.

On Instagram, Maranan described the proposal as the “easiest YES I’ve ever said” and shared her joy with the caption, “It’s you. It’s always been you.”

The couple first crossed paths on the set of “Eat Bulaga!” where Maranan performed as a member of the EB Babes, the show’s former all-female dance group. Their relationship remained private over the years, with fans only catching occasional glimpses of their bond.

Manalo was previously married to Anna Lyn Santos, with whom he has five children, including actors Benj and Nicco Manalo. Santos passed away in January 2022 at the age of 54.
